Stormi was not supposed to happen. Not like that. Not yet. We had two dogs, a tidy routine, and a Google calendar that almost, sort of, kind of made sense. Then a friend of a friend sent a photo, and the photo was a potato with eyes, and the potato needed a home by the weekend.
Reader, we went to see the potato. You know what happens next.
Meet the problem
Knight is the King of Mlems, but he is also the King of Opinions. Aston has one job, which is to be the queen of the couch, and she takes that job very seriously. Introducing a third dog into a pack that has already signed its peace treaty is not a casual decision. It is geopolitics. With treats.
We braced for drama. We got something better. We got a long, slow, quietly hilarious arc that played out over months.
A slow burn, day by day
Here is the abbreviated field journal, edited for length, because the full version has too many entries about him pretending she is a piece of furniture.
- Day 1: Knight pretends she does not exist. He stares at the ceiling fan for forty minutes. The ceiling fan has never been more flattered.
- Day 3: Stormi walks under Knight. Knight becomes a statue. A very tall, very offended statue.
- Day 7: Knight sighs loudly when she enters the room. This is progress. This is communication.
- Day 14: Knight leaves his bone unattended for two seconds. Stormi takes the bone. Knight watches her go. He does nothing. History is being made.
- Day 37: Knight looks at her. Progress.
- Day 58: Knight allows her to drink from his water bowl. He does this by not moving. It is the pitbull equivalent of writing her into the will.
- Day 84: Knight initiates play. Knight. Initiates. Play. We cried in the kitchen over reheated coffee.
- Day 120: Knight naps next to her. The internet weeps.
Aston, senior consultant
Aston watched all of this with the patience of a woman who has seen many things and chooses to be amused by most of them. She let Stormi follow her around like a shadow. She gave her the good spot on the couch exactly one time, then took it back forever, which is how boundaries work in this house.
If Knight was the slow burn, Aston was the quiet mentor. Stormi learned how to be a lady from her. Now Stormi does the sass. Now Stormi does the side eye. Aston has created a little clone and she sleeps very well at night.
What we learned
You cannot rush a pitbull into loving another dog. You can only set the table. Feed on the same schedule. Walk on the same path. Respect the personal space of the elder statesman. Do not force a cuddle pile for the camera, because the camera will know, and the dogs will know, and you will know.
Eventually, one day, you will look up and there will be a big blue brindle and a small pink bean sleeping in the exact same curl, and you will understand that it happened without you. Love showed up while you were making dinner.
And now they are inseparable. See for yourself on TikTok.
